African American Museum of Southern Illinois’s Soul Food Buffet: Down-home Cooking for a Cause
What: Taste of Soul (banquet, benefit)
February, African American History Month, has come and gone. But the cause of preserving and promoting the contributions of African Americans in Southern Illinois goes on, nowhere in a more detailed or celebrated manner than at the African American Museum of Southern Illinois in the University Mall.
To say a special thank you to patrons, bring awareness to the museum’s ongoing and upcoming exhibits, and raise funds for the ongoing work of preserving the past for the minds and hearts of the future, the Soul Food Buffet will serve up a heaping helping of down-home goodness Saturday, March 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Eurma C. Hayes Community Center in Carbondale.
Event coordinator Carolin Harvey tells Nightlifethat the Soul Food Buffet is just that, “a fun afternoon featuring some great food.” The all-you-can-eat menu will include soul-food classics like greens, cornbread, fried chicken, and pork chops, as well as country classics like turkey and dressing, hot macaroni and cheese, and a variety of trimmings-- or, as Harvey puts it, “lots, lots more.”
The afternoon’s proceeds will support the historical and art exhibits hosted by the museum throughout the year, the many school and summer children’s programs the museum sponsors, and the restoration of the old Attucks School as a permanent home for the museum.
Harvey is hoping that people with a love for the past and hope for the future will come out to enjoy food, fun, and fellowship, all for a worthy cause.
“We welcome any and everyone who likes good, old-fashioned country and soul cooking to come out for a fun afternoon featuring some great food,” Harvey says.
Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for children ten and younger. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the museum at (618) 457-2217 or Corene McDaniel at (618) 924-4056.
