Two things will always entice Southern Illinoisans to come out and open up their hearts and their wallets: a good cause and good music. Three years ago, Mark Stoffel and a host of other local musicians founded and created a forum for both with the first Cabin Fever Concert. Created to raise funds for the renovation and ongoing conservation of Murphysboro’s historic Liberty Theater, built in 1913, the Cabin Fever Concert also provides a showcase for some of Southern Illinois’s finest bluegrass and acoustic singer/songwriters.

The Cabin Fever Concert returns Saturday, February 4 at 7 p.m. to the Liberty with a triple bill featuring the Giant City Slickers, the Bankesters, and the Gordons. Tickets are $12 at the Liberty’s box office and online at <http://www.CabinFeverConcert.com>.

“This is always a wonderful evening,” Stoffel tells Nightlife. “It’s been growing every year, and it’s something that everybody looks forward to. It’s certainly a cause worth supporting, but people should come not just because of that. This is local talent, but they are most definitely reaching out nationally, especially the Gordons and the Bankesters. They’ve been doing so much touring and playing and they’ve been exposing themselves to audiences all over, not just in the United States but also worldwide. The Gordons have been touring Europe. This really is top-notch, quality entertainment. It just happens that these people are all from Southern Illinois, and we really hope that people will come out and see that.”

The Giant City Slickers-- featuring Stoffel, Jimmy Beers, Dan Goett, Nate Graham, and Alex Kirt-- will take audiences back to the era of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys as they turn the Liberty’s historic stage into a 1930s Texas dancehall with a blend of country and western swing.

Fans of earthy, down-home, Appalachian-flavored acoustic music will find themselves lulled into musical bliss by Southern Illinois legends the Gordons. Originally from Sparta, Gary and Roberta Gordon have been charming audiences across Southern Illinois and America since 1974, and producing critically acclaimed folk and acoustic recordings since 1976. Between Gary’s dobro, Roberta’s Appalachian autoharp, and the close family harmonies that the couple has spent nearly four decades perfecting, the Gordons’ music takes a trip back in time to simpler ways of living and singing.

Nationally known and critically acclaimed bluegrass band the Bankesters round out the evening. On their 2011 self-titled release, this musical family-- consisting of Phil and Dorene Bankester, along with their three daughters and son-in-law-- recorded with country legend Tom T. Hall and acoustic-music icon Jamie Johnson of the Grascals.
