Curtain Call: Meat My Package / Cutting the Fat

Curtain Call: Meat My Package / Cutting the Fat
Leah Williams Wright

One of Southern Illinois University's own live theaters is serving up a double bill just in time for the holidays.

Anna Wilcoxen's Meat My Package and Brian Healy's Cutting the Fat will run Thursday, December 2 through Saturday, December 4 at the Marion Kleinau Theatre on the second floor of the SIU Communications Building. All shows begin at 8 p.m.

While a first glance may make it seem that these two pieces are about what's on the menu for a holiday feast, both dive into petty serious subject matter. Wilcoxen's Package deals with queer female sexuality and all that it encompasses, while Healy's Cutting the Fat tackles body images and how people perceive others on the basis of weight and size.

More than two-hundred performances, about five shows a year, have taken place at the Kleinau since it opened in 1959. Faculty and students use the theater to research elements of human communication through performances. Productions are often experimental-- shows employ unusual techniques, forms, and production methods by mainstream theater standards.

General admission tickets to the Kleinau double bill are $7, or $5 for students with valid identification. No one will be admitted after the performance begins.

For tickets and other information, call the Kleinau box office at (618) 453-5618 or visit <http://SpeechCommunication.siuc.edu> and follow the link to the Kleinau Theatre.
